The most traditional way for Venetians to eat and hang out is at wine bars known as bacari. Where you stand around together in the bar and talk over an ombra (small glass of wine) and cicchetti (Venetian tapas).
for dinner-- osteria alla staffa

Campo Sta Margherita, hardware store, both turps (trementina) and white spirit (acua ragia).

I have received several replies from Venice police concerning restrictions on painting. The answer is that there are no restrictions or laws against painters.
As always however the police have a responsibility for public safety and to ensure free movement of pedestrians.
We therefore have to be very careful when and where we set up.
Do not cause obstructions especially with easels with a big footprint and consider what might happen if people stop to watch you.
Be considerate especially toward the elderly by not blocking hand rails on bridges etc.
Do not soil the pavements with paint or oil splashes. Take your waste away with you.
Be careful not to display other paintings in the hope of getting easel sales. Licenced vendors are entitled to protection from hawkers.
The criteria are all being clarified now so that it is clearer for the police to understand that we are just tourists enjoying ourselves and not trying to be a nuisance to anyone.
Let the police station know that you are there to paint!
This is all common sense and hopefully there should be no more problems!

To get to either the Alilaguna ferry or the buses, you follow the signs pointing the way. There is a moving footway to the Alilaguna wharf, and buses leave from right outside the terminal.
it is your choice whether you take the Alilaguna ferry, or a bus to Piazzale Roma and then a vaporetto. Time and cost are about the same. My choice would be the Alilaguna because I would not need to change along the way.
There are buses to Piazzale Roma run by ACTV and AVTO. You can use either. The destination is shown in big letters at the front of the bus.
